Motherhood

Lots of people write books for 1st time mothers, but how should you act when you're an old mother? Afterall, your children are always your children. I remember my grandmother, Harriet Emily Malin Pack, introducing my 40+ yr. old dad to someone saying, "He's my baby."

Since being in New York I miss everyone all the more.

Time, distance, and myriad influences change things. We're always progressing and growing and learning and maturing. Whatever the reasons, we each become different than we were in our nuclear family. So visiting my children and their spouses, I see the person I knew and the new person.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZ!

Tuckahoe

Our New York trip was great, and the Village of Tuckahoe always intrigues me--the Bronx River Parkway, the old granite walls and bridges, the little hills and vales. Of course, our children and grandchildren were just as beautiful and perfect as ever. How lucky to get in on Jonah's and Olive's Thanksgiving school program. I love and miss everyone.

Little Ol' Lady from Pasadena

A quick 24 hr. trip to St. George to check up on Urquharts, GG, and MaryLu--who currently resides at Porters Rest Home. A highlight of the trip was shopping with GG and MaryLu.

In Target I worried about 90-year-old GG standing, so I got an electric cart and persuaded her to get on. She gave it a tentative try and was instantly hooked. She was all over the store. In fact, when Mary and I were ready to go we didn't know where to start looking for her. I'd last seen her disappearing among the pajamas, but MaryLu suddenly shouted,"There she goes!" ML called, "Lucille!" to no avail, so we ran the length of Target catching up with her.

Glue Stick

A random post. Life seems hectic just now, but I was recently reminded of how much I love these Post-It Note glue sticks, removable glue. They make any sheet of paper a "post-it note." Avery makes their version of it, too.

Ancestry.com

Ancestry.com is free right now--not just for three days as advertised on Good Morning America, but for the whole month. You don't have to be way into genealogy. Just get on the site and look up someone or something while you can. And once you're on, you can see the Boise newspaper clipping that I tried to share below.

Rainy Day Ad

A rainy day here. See this advertisement from Boise, Idaho, Nov, 10, 1891, the bottom right corner.

4-H

I love 4-H. It's a wonderful program. This week a couple of Mendon friends have gone to 4-H sewing camp training for two days. As a mom I didn't take advantage of it, I think because I wasn't partial to the logo design. Seriously. But 4-H is alive and well and doing great things, even in non-rural areas. It's the heart of every county fair.

I'm using a pig picture, but I'm especially impressed with the summer sewing classes for elementary girls.

Autumn Treat

Well, Election Day is over and we're happy for both Steve and Sara U. in the outcome. Now it's back to business for most of us.

If you need one more fall suggestion, here's a good-looking, good-tasting autumn mix--nutty and buttery and salty but not too sweet. No chocolate. I know, I know--"chocolate improves anything," but in this case the flavors are best left alone.

NUTS: salted cashews, almonds, macadamias

CANDIED PEANUTS: butter toffee, "baked beans," "burnt"

CANDY: Reece's pieces, corn candy,
sour fruit balls (red, orange, yellow),
pumpkins

Genealogy

Rachel and I are doing a team-thing with Shainwald family history. I figure out where we are and she goes to the FH Center and gets the information. Some of her best finds are from Ancestry.com, a subscription service. They've been offering three days of free service. You can find a lot of stuff in three days, so try it.

The picture is Richard Herman Shainwald, your great-grandfather. The link is one Robin K. and Salem found for real estate broker, Herman Shainwald, brother to Richard Sigmund Shainwald.

Halloween Follow-up

The '57 Chevy happened to be out of the garage on Halloween night, so this ghost-driver appeared.

God Bless America

We're feeling extra patriotic these days: voting, Veteran's Day and anticipating Maj. Paul coming home. It's exciting to see two Urquhart names on the Utah ballot. Anyone trying the Early Voting?

Family Photos

See, Salem. We DID take pictures of you in your Halloween costume. Liz, Jared didn't get his outfit on yet, but he looked really cute.
